UEFA Europa League: Recounting the Nigerian Exploits


The UEFA Europa League Thursday full fixtures saw a host of Nigerian players across Europe deeply involved in the action in various centers.

***  Former Lobi Stars striker Philip Azango scored the third goal for his less fancied Slovakia side FC Trencin on their way to recording a huge 4-0 win over Dutch powerhouse Feyenoord. Azango was supported by two other Nigerian teammates Reuben Yem and Abdul Zubairu as they take a heavy lead ahead of the return leg in the Netherlands next week.

***  Striker Daniel Chima in the colours Molde FC was up against veteran former Nigerian international Efe Ambrose for home side Hibernian in a game that ended 0-0 in Scotland. Ambrose went the distance while Chima was subbed off by former Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now coach of the Norwegian side in the 72nd minute. Another Nigerian Leke James was thrown in by Molde FC in the 62nd minute, but no one could find a break through.

***  On loan FC Roma striker at Rangers Sadiq Umar was brought on by coach Steven Gerrard with only two minutes left of regulation time as Rangers sealed a 3-1 win over visiting Swedish side Moribor FC. On loan from Liverpool, English born midfielder of Nigerian decent Ovie Ejaria was subbed off in the 78th minute after he was booked eight minutes earlier.

** It was an evening to forget for Nigerian defender Friday Obilor whose Finnish travelling side FC HJK were walloped by Olimpija Ljubljana 3-0.

***  French side Bordeaux ran out 3-1 winners away to Mariupol Fcy. Though their new Nigerian winger Samuel Kalu was not in the travelling squad after completing his transfer within the week.

***  On loan Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi is still searching for his first goal for Belgian club Gent after he fired blanks in their 1-0 away success at FC Jagiellonia Bialystok. Jonathan David who replaced Awoniyi in the 69th minute went on to score the match winner with five minutes left to play.

***  Nigerian 21-year-old striker Emeka Eze came on as 57th minute substitute for his 10 men Austrian team Sturm Graz, he could not help prevent a 0-2 loss to visiting Cyprus aide AEK Larnaca.

*** Switzerland midfielder of Nigerian heritage Noah Okafor was an unused substitute for Basel who claimed a 1-0 win away to Dutch side Vitesse who threw in Nigerian attacker Hillary Chukah with 20 minutes left to play.

***  Former Golden Eaglets midfielder Rabiu Ibrahim was given just three minutes run out by his Slovakian club Slovan Bratislava who were forced to a 1-1 draw at home to by Rapid Wien.

***  Nigerian attacker Yusuf Otubanjo played the final 12 minutes of Austrian side FC LASK 0-1 narrow defeat to Turkish giants Beşiktaş away from home.

***  Former Golden Eaglets captain, defender Musa Mohammed was on the benched for his new team FC Rijeka of Croatia in their 1-1 draw at Sarpsborg 08.
