Usule Martins late goal denies Rivers United victory

A late goal by Usule Martins for Katsina United denied hosts Rivers United all three points in a matchday 33 Nigeria Professional League encounter.

Having trailed for the most part of the match, Martins latched on to a through pass and fired home to stun Rivers United supporters in the Yakubu Gowon stadium. The match ended 1-1 and saw the visitors head home the happier of the two sides.

Malian striker Abdoulaye Kanoute had earlier opened scores on 44 minutes when he shot into an empty net with Katsina United keeper Yinka David caught in no man’s land.

Rivers United only had themselves to blame after they bossed possession of the ball but created little with it, not forgetting their silly time wasting tactics when they could have added to their lead.

After they had taken the lead through Yinka David’s error in which he rushed out of his box only to gift the ball to Lukman Mohammed who passed it to Kanoute for a simple lobbed shot into the net, the pride of Rivers struggled to create much.

Before he was substituted, Katsina United’s Ada Joseph missed an open goal that could have drawn his side level on 70 minutes. Sunday Rotimi produced a superb save from Faisal Sani’s header, the ball fell for Obinna Eleje who crossed to Stephen, but he somehow skied his effort from two-yards.

With the game winding down, Rivers United’s time wasting tactics backfired on them. Katsina United won a header from Semiu Liadi’s goal kick with substitute Adah Stephen the benefactor of the loose ball. He found Martins unmarked on the right with a through pass who stroked home the equalizer with his first touch.

The one point gained saw Katsina United climb out of the relegation zone on goal difference. They have 43 points, tied on the same number of points with ABS in 17th position but they have a better goal difference of -6 as against ABS’ -11. Katsina United will play Wikki Tourists this weekend on NPFL matchday 34.

Meanwhile Rivers United have now recorded just one win in seven NPFL matches. They are in 18th place, with 42 points from 33 matches. They next play bottom placed side Remo Stars on matchday 34 in Sagamu.
