Super Eagles number one goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has received an apology from Deportivo La Coruna coach Carmelo Del Pozo over racist comments he directed at the shot stopper.
Carmelo del Pozo previously made remarks with racist suggestions that drew a sharp response from the young Nigerian goal tender.
”I hope they do not forget that they are where they are thanks to Deportivo, because they opted for them, others coming from Africa when they did not have clothes or money. Everyone has to remember that Deportivo was the club that put them in the window,” Del Pozo said while reacting to Uzoho’s demands for first team regular playing time.
Uzoho quickly replied rather cleverly through his Twitter handle; “I came to this world without clothes, so it’s not so bad that I also came to Europe without clothes. At home they taught me to choose my battle wisely.”
Even though he deleted the tweet later, the message cut the attention of everyone, with the management of the club stepping in quickly to avert a huge scandal.
The whole brouhaha started after the signing of another goalkeeper in Ortola, which Uzoho was unimpressed with and his reaction suggested he was pushing for a transfer away from the club.
“We all know what this mean now,” Uzoho tweeted. Though he clarified his comments as not related to the coach.
The now relegated Deportivo coach during the official unveiling of new signing Domingos Duarte, went on to say he has apologised to Uzoho about the comments which many saw as racist remark.
”The next day I spoke with Francis and I gave him my explanations and apologies. Our idea has not changed from the first day and it will not change,” he said.
The club President Fernandez swiftly wadded into the matter in a press release saying Uzoho is a very dear player for Deportivo.
“Today, he is one of the three goalkeepers of the first team in the head of the coach and we will see what happens,” Fernandez said while speaking with @TorredeMarathon.
“Some team has contacted me informally to have Francis on the bench, but Francis has to play, he can not be the third goalkeeper or the substitute, no matter how much, he should be in the first team.”
Meanwhile, Francis Uzoho who broke into the Deportivo Lacurona first team last season is yet to respond to the latest development.
Uzoho made three games senior appearances for Deportivo last season and his brilliant performances caught the eye of the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, who made him his number one goalkeeper at the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
