Super Eagles defender Stephen Eze has been ruled out of the 2017 WAFU Cup semi-final match between Nigeria and Benin Republic on Thursday at the Cape Coast Stadium.
The FC Ifeanyi Ubah defender sat out Nigeria’s last training session at the Takoradi stadium on Wednesday.
“Eze is sick and he won’t be available for the game, he will be a big miss but we can’t help it. We have got capable replacement with Emmanuel Ariwa available for selection,” a team official disclosed to Naijafootballplus.com.
Eze won’t be part of the matchday squad against Benin Republic due to illness, but the former Sunshine Stars defender is optimistic about his team’s chances of reaching the final.
“I want to appreciate our fans back home for their amazing support since the tournament kicked off, we have received positive messages about the team. I also want to appreciate the Federation for giving us this platform to serve the country, to my coaches and team-mates for all the hard work,” said Eze to Naijafootballplus.com in Takoradi.
“After the Mali and Guinea games there was a lot of pressure in camp, we task ourselves about progressing and achieving the result against the host country, it was massive for us. We concentrated on beating Ghana and cared less about the other games result, the communication among the group was that we must not exit the tournament in the group stages.
“We are more relaxed after the victory against Ghana, they (Benin) might be thinking of a revenge mission but we are more focused on the game. We have taken this bold progress and we want to play in the final.”
The game will kickoff 4pm at the Cape Coast Stadium.
