WAFU Cup: Ezenwa, Ali, and Okpotu top list of invitees


Head coach of Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles Salisu Yusuf has released an 18-man list for the West African Football Union (WAFU) Nations Cup billed for this month in Ghana.

Goalkeeping rave of the moment, Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Plateau United first choice safe hands, Dele Ajiboye are just the 2 goalkeepers called. Rabiu ‘Pele’ Ali along with fellow goalscorer in the CHAN Qualifier against Benin Republic in Kano, Kingsley Eduwo are both included.

Also included are NPFL joint leading goalscorer and Lobi Stars forward, Anthony Okpotu, Akwa United’s Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Peter Eneji of Plateau United.

Nigeria will play Sierra Leone in the first round of the tournament which is a knockout​ phase before proceeding into the group stage proper.

In the same Group A that has Nigeria, hosts Ghana will play The Gambia, Mali are up against Mauritania and Guinea Bissau will clash with Guinea, all of them will be playing in Takoradi.

Group B challenge holds in Cape Coast. 2015 African champions Cote d’Ivoire headlines a group that also has Senegal, Burkina Faso and Benin Republic, with Liberia, Niger Republic, Togo and Cape Verde.

The competition takes place September 19-24.
