Nigeria’s Super Falcons hope of emerging champions at the maiden edition of the WAFU women cup was dashed on Thursday as they lost to their Ghanaian counterpart 5-4 on penalties with the match having ended 1-1 after regulation time.
Alice Ogebe gave Nigeria the lead in the 8th minutes of an epoch semi-final game played at the Parc de Sports, but Faustina Ampah cancelled that lead on the 10 minutes later.
The rivalry of the two side were in full display with none of them ready to give up the game.
The Black Queens of Ghana played better in the second half but Super Falcons defenders nullified all the attack thrown at them throughout the second half and ended the game at 1-1.
Ghana goalkeeper Patricia Mantey made two brave saves of Nigeria’s kicks – their first and last before Alice Nkusi scored the decisive penalty to put Ghana through to the final, while hardworking Grace Asantewaa was unfortunate to see her kick saved by Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Ghana will now play host Ivory Coast in the final of the competition while Nigeria will play Mali in the third-place match.
