Weekend review: Real bag first Bernabeu league win; City win at the Bridge


It seemed a matter of time and on Sunday it finally happened, as Real Madrid recorded their first La Liga at home this season, against Espanyol. A dominant first half found its reward midway through, as Los Blancos opened the scoring thanks to Isco finishing from Ronalso’s pass. Espanyol hit the post as the half wore to a close, and had a number of decent opportunities to level matters in the second period, but none was taken and with 20 minutes left Isco added a second, to seal the win, and take Real to fifth place in La Liga.

In the Premier League, the headline fixture was log leaders Manchester City’s trip to Stamford Bridge to take on the champions. It was a game high on intensity but low on chances, and the only opportunity taken was by City’s Kevin de Bruyne in the 67th minute, to keep the Citizens top of the table, six points ahead of their hosts.

In the Serie A, Juventus surrendered a two-goal lead at Atalanta, and also had a penalty saved in the 2-2 draw, a result which gave Napoli a gap at the top, as Maurizio Sarri’s team were comfortable 3-0 winners over Cagliari.

In other results, AC Milan were humbled at home by Roma in Serie A, while Bayern Munich began their Post-Ancelotti Bundesliga era rhe same way they ended with the Italian manager, by surrendering a two-goal lead, this time away at Hertha Berlin, and PSG bagged six at home to Bordeaux in Ligue 1.

Liverpool were held in the Premier League at Newcastle, Monaco dropped Ligue 1 points at home to Montpellier and there was a feast of goals in La Liga, with 4-4 and 3-3 draws in a week where the league saw 37 goals.
