If ever there was a man who is fast becoming the undisputed king of mind games in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), MFM FC technical adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu may be best fit for the title.
Before the new NPFL season began, Ilechukwu revealed his side might struggle this season and might finish outside the top 10. The team last season finished second behind champions Plateau United thereby nicking a CAF Champions League ticket.
Last season top scorer Stephen Odey has since moved to Europe, talk of MFM completing the signing of Victor Mboama, Oche Salefu and other players lined-up by the gaffer to improve the quality of the team has since fell through.
The Olukoya Boys began their continental campaign with a 1-1 draw at AS Real Bamako and have not enjoyed a pleasant start to the new NPFL season so far.
On Friday at the Soccer Temple, Agege MFM secured their fourth home win against Akwa United, the result which moved the Olukoya Boys to 8th position with 12 points with four points behind league leaders Akwa United. Having witnessed the triumph over the NPFL table toppers, Ilechukwu is now optimistic his side can still finish in the continental spots come the end of the season.
“Top four is possible this season, with our amazing performance against the league leaders I am confident we can finish among the top four this season,” Ilechukwu boosted.
Naijafootballplus.com asked the newly appointed CHAN Eagles and National U23 assistant coach about his previous comment before the season began.
Ilechukwu added: “We played the best team in Nigeria and also with one of the best coaches in Nigeria, if we can survive the two attributes it’s obvious we are capable of finishing among the top four teams this season.
“In life there’s negative and positive, I always admit both in situations of my life. We had challenges during our preseason but I am optimistic I will turn things around. The victory over Akwa United has spurred us to believe we can finish among the best teams this season.”
