Rivers Angels tastes first victory of season

A strong second half performance by Nigeria Women Premier League defending champions, Rivers Angels proved pivotal in their 3-0 home victory against FC Robo.

In a dour first half were both teams struggled to keep hold of the ball, it was Cynthia Aku of Rivers Angels who missed a glorious opportunity for the games first chance. Aku blazed well over the goal in the 32nd minute to jeers from spectators.

With 5 minutes before the break, Sule Rafiat miscued an inswinging cross with the goal at her mercy.

FC Robo who looked like they were set up for a point were put on the back foot by the home side just after the restart.

Rivers Angels’ Chinaza Uchendu struck the foot of the post with a toe poke right footed shot from inside the 18-yard box just after the hour mark. That attempt woke the side from Lagos from their slumber as Monday Gift broke free of the Rivers Angels defence only to see her shot saved by Tochukwu Oluehi in goal for Rivers Angels.

Cynthia Aku then produced arguably the best moment of the match when she dribbled her way through the FC Robo defence and unleashed an unstoppable shot to give the jewel of Rivers the lead.

Chinanza Uchendu then scored from the penalty spot after the referee had adjudged an FC Robot player handled Uchendu’s header from a corner kick.

Cynthia Aku then wrapped up the game with an exquisite lob past the onrushing FC Robo goalkeeper, Amole Damilola for the third goal and her second of the day.

The win was Rivers Angels’ first win of the season after two matches. Meanwhile, it was FC Robo’s first defeat of the season having played 3 matches.
