Russia 2018: FIFA names Argentine referee for opening match

By Sampson Benjamin.

Just as the opening match of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup gathers momentum, World football governing FIFA has named Nestor Pitana as centre referee for the match.

The opening game will be between host Russia and Saudi Arabia slated for Luzhniki stadium in Moscow on Thursday.

FIFA confirmed his appointment via it’s twitter handle.

“Argentina’s Nestor Pitana has been assigned as the referee for the Opening Match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ between Russia and Saudi Arabia on Thursday, 14 June at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow,” FIFA revealed.

Saudi Arabia will be chasing history against Russia on the day because a win for them will make it first time an host country lose on the opening day.
