Super Falcons and their preparation for France 2019

As we gradually count down to the 8th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup that kicks off from 7th June – 7th July 2019 across 9 cities in France, the Super Falcons of Nigeria led by Thomas Dennerby is leaving no stone unturned in order to ensure that Nigeria’s flag won’t be hoisted across the cities in France just to make up numbers.

Dennerby has been working assiduously to ensure that this 8th edition of FIFA Women’s World Cup will be the best appearance in the history of Nigeria. This target may be a tall mountain to climb but just as he set and achieved his target before 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nation’s in Ghana, Dennerby is optimistic that his team will do well in France.

” When I arrived in Nigeria, I said that first we needed to qualify for the World Cup at the AWCON, and then try to win it, and we eventually did both. So as for France, I have to be honest and set a target that everyone can meet. So far, the only target we have set is that we want to be the very best Nigerian team that has even been to the World Cup”.

Dennerby has enjoyed more than enough support from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, as regards quality preparations ahead of the world cup.

Since after the African Women’s Cup of Nation in Ghana 2018, Super Falcons have played six top grade matches, won three and lost three.

Immediately after the Cyprus Women’s Cup tournament, Dennerby invited 30 home based players to camp in Nigeria in a bid to search for players that will possibly join the foreign based to France.

While in camp, the girls played a friendly match with  Abees Golden Football Academy, Abuja though the result ended 1 – 1, but the objective of the match was for the coaching crew to know how well the players are assimilating what they are taught.

After two weeks of training, Dennerby picked five players that were able to assimilate and are ready to compete with the foreign based players. The lucky five players are :

1. Anam Imo – Forward ( Nasarawa Amazon)
2. Alice Ogbe – Forward ( Rivers Angels)
3. Chiamaka Nnadozie – Goalkeeper ( Rivers Angels)
4. Tochukwu Oluehi – Goalkeeper ( Rivers Angels)
5. Alaba Jonathan – Goalkeeper ( Bayelsa Queens)

The five players and coaching crew will depart Nigeria today (Tuesday) to Spain where they will engage Canada in another top grade friendly match, the team will depart Spain for Austria where they will camp before heading to France for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
